What Are Light Ends?

When the bindings of the hydro carbon chains break the short-chained light ends are produced. The higher the operating temperature, the more light ends are generated. The rate at which the light ends are produced is dependent on the oil type and the operating temperature.

Why Do I need to Manage Light Ends?

Light ends boil and ignite at lower temperatures and reduce the ignition point (flash point) of thermal fluid, this creates a fire hazard and you have a duty to manage this in line with DSEAR / ATEX Health and Safety Regulations.

Light ends also lead to cavitation in thermal fluid system pumps, which can lead to operational problems.

When light ends are produced your system and your workforce safety is severely compromised.

Removing Light Ends

The light ends removal kit is tailored to your heating system and the thermal oil you use. Light ends removal kits can be used on both large and small systems, which may be open or closed (with a nitrogen blanket) and used with both mineral and synthetic thermal fluids.

You can use the light ends removal kit for a fixed duration on a temporary basis (this is when using the active pump fed unit)

How does it work?

The light ends removal kit works when the hot thermal fluid flows through the distillation vessel and the gaseous light ends are collected in the liquid phase of the condenser. The light ends are either drained automatically or manually from the system. The system is not open to atmosphere as a hot expansion tank would be. This protects the oil against oxidation ageing.
Most light ends are generated in the hot flow line and the heater and, to a lesser extent, in the cooler return line. For typical thermal fluid heating systems using mineral oil and a temperature of 280°c the decomposition rate is 3.5% per year. For example – in a system of 30,000 litres of thermal fluid this is 1.000 litres per year.
